Mary McFerren retired in October 2014 after 27 years of service to Virginia Tech. Read more about her career in the Fall 2014 Happenings (page 6).
In 1987, Mary McFerren began her career with VCE in King George County, Virginia. In 1996, she became an area coordinator for the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education. In 2004, she moved to Blacksburg to work with Ruby Cox, HNFE's VCE state coordinator and also began her doctorate in education. When Cox retired in 2005, McFerren was appointed to the state coordinator role, which she held for nine years. Her influence enriched the lives of countless people throughout her career.
1992: Outstanding Leadership Award, awarded by Virginia State Senator John H. Chicester
2002: Outstanding Program Award for Child and Adolescent Obesity Education, awarded by Epsilon Sigma Phi
2003: Community Partnership Award for the Kids Up Front Camp by the National Association of Extension Family & Consumer Sciences
2009: Outstanding New VT Alumni Award by the Virginia Tech College of Agriculture & Life Sciences
2011: Silver Award for Graphic Design, Class 14, Posters by the Association for Communication Excellence, Critique, and Awards Program
