Ann A. Hertzler, PhD
Professor Emerita and Extension Specialist
(September 9, 1935 - February 6, 2014)
A native of Pennsylvania, Ann Hertzler earned a bachelor’s degree in home economics education from Penn State in 1957, a master’s degree in nutrition from Drexel University in 1960, and a doctorate in nutrition (with a minor in sociology) from Cornell University in 1973.
Hertzler joined Virginia Tech’s faculty in 1980, having previously served as an associate professor and Extension specialist at the University of Missouri. During her two decade career as a Virginia Cooperative Extension specialist, she was distinguished by numerous awards, which included a Fulbright Scholarship to Australia from 1989 to 1990.
Hertzler authored, co-authored, or was involved in more than 80 peer-reviewed journal articles and juried exhibits. She also wrote multiple book chapters and nutrition education publications and was an advisor and committee member for many master’s and doctoral students.
"Ann was involved in all three missions of the university," said former colleague William Barbeau, referring to teaching, research, and outreach. "Her main appointment was in Extension, but she also taught Socio-Cultural Food Systems (undergraduate) and Family Food Behavior (graduate) for the department. Ann was a noted researcher in the area of community nutrition."
Hertzler's work focused on nutrition issues facing families and children, and she maintained her passion for that subject even after retiring in 2001. She continued to publish research, and was a generous donor to Virginia Tech University Libraries, which benefits from the Ann Hertzler Endowment for Children’s Cookbooks and Nutrition. Upon her death, she bequeathed her cookbook collection, other books, and the remainder of her personal papers to the library.
"Dr. Hertzer’s enthusiasm for promoting knowledge in this area was remarkable, as was her generosity in doing so," said Dean of University Libraries Tyler Walters. "Her generosity is a major reason our Special Collections has such a comprehensive collection of works in the area of children’s cooking and nutrition."
Ann Hertzler had retired to Wilmington, North Carolina. She loved opera, visiting historical sites, and helping others. She was the daughter of J. Vernon and Evelyn Atherton Hertzler, and twin to John Hertzler, who are all deceased.

Ann Hertzler: Professor, Extension Specialist, and Culinary Friend
Ann Hertzler Endowment for Children's Cookbooks and Nutrition Literature: Ann was instrumental in bringing the Peacock-Harper Culinary Collection to the University Libraries and initiated a $100,000 endowed fund to establish this collection, a subset of the larger History of Food & Drink Collection. Most of the 450 volumes are housed in Special Collections; search Addison using the keyword "Hertzler" or "children's cookbook" or "cookery--juvenile literature."
