Talk at the Table - 90.7 WUVT

Drs. Elena Serrano and Brenda Davy are now hosting a regular feature as the Food, Wine and Health Enthusiasts for the weekly “Talk at the Table” radio show on WUVT (90.7 FM), aired each Sunday from 3-5p, and hosted by Andy Morikawa and Diane Porter Goff.  Drs. Serrrano and Davy visit local restaurants and food-related venues to offer an insight into what the Blacksburg and surrounding communities have to offer in terms of food, wine, and health.

From Diet to the Depression – Food, Weight, and Communities - June 28, 2009
Dr. Davy talks about what people think of when they hear “diet” and encourages individuals to instead consider “lifestyle changes” that are enjoyable and realistic and can be maintained over time for weight loss and maintenance. Dr. Serrano discusses a study conducted with unemployed individuals in southwest Virginia about the recession and food sufficiency. Although suffering financially, these individuals reporting feeling self-reliant and resourceful and thought that the recession was building stronger families and communities.  Other topics included the ‘cost’ of local produce, subsidies, and environmental issues around food.

 

Excellent Table - July 26, 2009
In this segment, Drs. Davy and Serrano tour the Excellent Table, and Ethiopian Restaurant in downtown Blacksburg, and  interview Haregewin Bekele, the owner and chef, about her transition from Ethiopia to the United States and ultimately Blacksburg and Virginia Tech. The interview proves to be insightful about Ethiopian and American cuisines, as well as the appeal of Blacksburg.
