Welcome to the Department of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise, a unique department that offers an impressive array of learning opportunities. HNFE is thriving and poised for exciting changes. We are enthusiastically active in strategically planning and expanding our mission to promote health and wellness with an emphasis on translational science, service to the community, and providing quality education for undergraduate and graduate students. Above all, we continuously foster innovation in research, education, and regional outreach to improve the health of Virginians and the nation.
HNFE’s unique fusion of nutrition and exercise sciences positions us as a leader in education, prevention, research, and translational studies. Our nation’s knowledge of health is constantly under transformation, and students can prepare for these changes with the novel combination of focus areas at HNFE. Our talented and dynamic faculty are currently researching the molecular and applied aspects of obesity, diabetes, cancer, genetic diseases, and nutraceuticals. We’re examining the psychosocial aspects of health, behavioral interventions, human performance, and youth and adult weight management with a focus on chronic disease and prevention.
It is the goal of this department to lead the changes in health promotion, to develop cutting-edge research, exceptional educational experiences, sustainable practices, and pursue a larger vision of excellence and scholarship.
