Research Interests: Health Outcomes and the Cardiovascular and Respiratory Responses to Exercise in Chronic Diseases, With Emphasis on Cardiovascular Disease Patients

William G. Herbert, Ph.D., is Professor in the Department of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise at Virginia Tech. He has 31 years of experience directing cardiac rehabilitation and health fitness programs, teaching and conducting research in applied and clinical exercise physiology. He attended Kent State University, Kent, Ohio, where he received his bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. degrees in Exercise Physiology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and an ACSM certified Director of Rehabilitative Exercise Programs. He has been a contributor to recent editions of the ACSM's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription and the companion ACSM Resource Manual. He has served on the ACSM Committee for Certification and Education, including a term as chair between 1987 1990. Dr. Herbert has been an ACSM Vice-President and Member of its Board Trustees. He is a Founding Fellow in the American Association for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation and served on its Board of Directors. He contributed to the first two editions AACVPR's Guidelines for Cardiac Rehabilitation Programs and Core Competencies for Cardiac Rehabilitation Professionals. In 1995, he served as Vice-chair of AACVPR Cardiac Rehabilitation Criteria Development Panel that developed a quality assessment criteria/review system for use in evaluating cardiac rehabilitation services in relation to the Guideline for Cardiac Rehabilitation (Guideline # 17: published by Agency for Health Care Policy Research, U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services; 1995). In 2001, he completed a 3-year term as Chair of the ACSM Clinical Exercise Physiology Practice Board and is a co-editor for the forthcoming Clinical Exercise Physiology Supplement to the ACSM Guidelines for Graded Exercise Testing and Prescription (expected publication date: mid-2002). Dr Herbert has been a member of the editorial board for the ACSM Health & Fitness Journal, and now is on editorial review boards for the Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, the American Journal of Medicine & Sports, and Clinical Exercise Physiology. He has authored approximately 110 technical and research articles. In recent years, he has been an invited speaker at major cardiac rehabilitation conferences in Denmark and Scotland. He has co-authored a book, several book/monograph chapters, and journal articles dealing with standards of care and safety in exercise programs, exercise electrocardiography, circulatory responses to exercise, patient outcomes with exercise interventions both for coronary artery disease and obstructive sleep apnea patients, the effects of exercise on bone strength. He also is principal investigator with a multidisciplinary research team that now is investigating the adaptive effects of exercise training on bone strength in military-aged women.
